Broiler

Light is a key management tool for broilers; photoperiod, intensity, and colour spectrum can be managed to improve performance and welfare and encourage natural behaviours.

The spectrum of light (colour) that chicken see is different to humans. Using lights that account for this will enhance productivity and welfare that’s why our ALIS LED barn lamps have been developed specifically for livestock vision. Scientific research suggests that blue light (a wavelength of between 380-500nm) can help reduce stress and fear in broilers so we made blue barn lamps an integral part of our broiler package.

Production Yields

Rearing birds on ALIS lighting compared to CFL has been shown to increase gross margin by 0.87p per net kg. With an average final broiler weight of 2.75kg, this equates to 2.39p per bird.*

Improved behaviour

Between one and five weeks of age, broilers under ALIS lighting performed significantly more perching compared to those under CFL lamps.*  Increased perching indicates enrichment use and increased flock mobility.

Poultry love ALIS

Independent scientific trials have shown reductions in mortality in broilers reared under ALIS lighting.  Mortality is a key indicator of flock health and disease status which can also reflect flock welfare.  Better litter quality was also observed, with fewer shavings being used to ‘dress’ the litter during the crop, resulting in an average saving per crop of £100.*

Welfare

ALIS induction power provides constant current with low to zero photometric flicker. This eliminates stress-inducing strobe effects. Independent scientific trials have also shown that birds reared under ALIS lighting were more active (increased locomotor behaviour and use of enrichment: perches), and displayed behaviours that are indicative of better welfare.*

Safety

Inductive power technology means the Power Hubs and Dawn till Dusk (DTD) Control Panels can be located in separate areas from livestock, improving safety and biosecurity.

Robust

At our ALIS Barn Lamp manufacturing facility samples from every batch are tested to confirm the IPx6 capability is maintained.   IPx6 specifies the protection of equipment against the harmful effects of powerful water jets from any direction. The nozzle in the clip is 12.5mm in diameter and delivers 100 litres per minute. The test lasts 3 minutes. The ALIS Barn Lamp is between 2.5 and 3 meters from the nozzle. The water pressure is not a fixed parameter but is varied to achieve the flow rate.

An independent scientific study showed that during cleaning out 26.8% bulbs in a conventional lighting system required to be replaced compared to 0% in the ALIS lighting system.*

Uniformity of light

A larger number of smaller lamps, like ALIS Barn Lamp, gives greater uniformity and reduced shadows. Shadows create uneven flock distribution which can negatively impact litter quality and bird behaviour.

Breeder

For breeders, light is important for the stimulation of natural behaviours, physiology and growth as well as for the stimulation of the hormones required for egg production.

Lights for breeders should contain all colours of the spectrum.  However, red light is known to be important for the stimulation of sexual maturity, which is why our ALIS barn and nest lamps are ideal for breeders.  At 3100K or 3000K they emit a broad range spectrum of colour but err towards red.

Reduced shadowing

In floor-based systems non-uniform lighting and poorly lit nesting areas can lead to increased numbers of eggs laid on the floor. Floor eggs represent increased work and reduced revenue. A larger number of smaller lamps, like ALIS Barn Lamp, gives greater uniformity of light and reduced shadows.

Layer

Light is an essential management tool for commercial layers, being critical for pullet growth, egg production and bird welfare.

Red light is known to be essential for sexual maturation and the onset of egg production so while lights for layers should contain all colours of the spectrum it is essential to ensure sufficient red spectrum light.  Our ALIS barn and tube lamps at 3000K or 31000K emit a broad spectrum of light but err towards red making them ideal for commercial layers.

In one free range site floor eggs were reduced from 7.2% to 3% at peak after ALIS lighting was installed.

Future research

Here at Greengage we are keen to learn more about how our lighting systems benefit layers, that’s why we are working with Globogal and AVIFORUM in Switzerland to validate animal welfare behaviour in Layers.

Swine

Lighting is an important part of pig management as it influences, behaviour, welfare and production (both growth and reproduction).

Like many animals’ pigs vision differs to that of humans.  Their spectral vision ranges from 380 to 694nm with peaks at 439nm (blue) and 556 nm (green).  Pigs can also see flicker.  Optimal lighting will ensure pigs can become familiar with their environment and easily find feed and water and achieve social interaction.

Control over lighting

The ALIS lighting system assures control over your lighting programme making it easy to comply with any local regulations.  It also gives freedom to investigate the best lighting programme for you and your pigs.  A recent AHDB report on lighting for pigs (2019) quoted the results of a trial which showed that increasing photoperiod from 8 (current EU legislation) to 16 hours light a day resulted in a  production saving of £5.16 per pig with 15% improvement in daily live weight gain (DWLG); 10% improvement in Feed Conversion Rate (FCR) and an 11-day reduction in days to finish.

Future research areas

Greengage are working exclusively with BQP (British Quality Pigs) to explore the benefits of lighting and sensor technology to improve both performance and reduce incidences of tail biting and general aggression. We want to investigate the overall performance of pigs under housed under our lighting as well as determine the effect of light intensity and colour spectrums to manage aggression (tail biting).
